How to build a connection with someone when you don’t have time for long conversations?

Matching & Mirroring

Matching and mirroring involve subtly imitating the body language, gestures, tone of voice, and even breathing patterns of the person you’re interacting with. This technique helps establish rapport and create a sense of connection by signalling to the other person that you’re similar to them or understand them. When people feel that someone else is like them, they are more likely to feel comfortable and open up.

Matching and mirroring can be done by –

  1. Matching the other person’s posture, such as sitting or standing in a similar position.
  2. Mirroring their gestures and movements, like nodding when they nod or using similar hand gestures.
  3. Matching the pace and tone of their speech, adjusting your speaking speed and tone to match theirs.

By subtly aligning with the other person’s nonverbal cues, you create a subconscious bond that fosters connection and rapport, making it easier to establish trust and understanding quickly.

Parroting

Parroting involves repeating or paraphrasing the last few words or key points that someone has said. It demonstrates active listening and shows the other person that you’re engaged and paying attention to what they’re saying. Parroting allows you to reflect back their words, validating their thoughts and feelings, which can help deepen the connection and build rapport.

For example, if someone says, “I’m really excited about this new project,” you could respond by saying, “Excited about the new project, huh? That sounds like it’s going to be interesting.” This shows that you’re listening and interested in their perspective, which can foster a quick connection.

Give a Genuine Compliment

Offering a genuine compliment is a powerful way to establish a positive connection with someone quickly. When you compliment someone sincerely, it shows that you appreciate and value them, which can make them feel good about themselves and more inclined to open up to you.

For example, you might say, “I really admire how you handled that challenging situation in the meeting. Your calm and composed demeanour really impressed me,” or “You have a great sense of humour. Your jokes always lighten up the atmosphere and make everyone smile.”
